I thought I needed to spend thousands of pounds on fancy software to start digital marketing. I was wrong. The best tools I use are completely free. If you’re worried you can’t afford expensive subscriptions, stop worrying. You don’t need them.
Here are the five tools I actually use every single day
- Canva — Make graphics without being a designer
I can’t design. I never learned Photoshop. But I needed pictures for my blog posts and social media. Canva solved that immediately. You pick a template, add your own photos and text, and suddenly you have something professional. I use it for my digital marketing work all the time. It takes five minutes. The free version gives you everything you need to start building your brand.
- Google Trends — Figure out what people are actually searching for
When I’m writing a blog post, I don’t want to guess what people want to read. I use Google Trends. You type in a topic, and it shows you if people are actually searching for it right now. Before I write anything, I check this tool. It saves me from wasting time on topics nobody cares about. This is how I found out what people want to know about digital marketing.
- Meta Business Suite — Post to Instagram and Facebook at the same time
I have an Instagram creator account and a Facebook page. Instead of logging into each one separately, Meta Business Suite lets me do everything in one place. I can even schedule posts for later. When I’m busy, I can write five posts and schedule them throughout the week. That’s how I’ve been staying consistent with my social media presence.
- Unsplash — Free professional quality photos
Every blog post needs a picture. Unsplash has thousands of free, beautiful photos. I use it for my blog headers and social media. No watermarks, no weird copyright stuff. Just free images that actually look professional. This tool makes my content look polished without spending money on stock photos.
- ChatGPT or Claude — Get ideas and help with writing
When I’m stuck, I use ChatGPT or Claude to brainstorm ideas or get help understanding how to explain something. I don’t copy what they write directly because that’s plagiarism (I learned that the hard way). But I use them as thinking partners. They help me get started, understand complex topics, and bounce ideas around. That’s the right way to use AI tools.
Why these tools matter for your business
These tools are free, they actually work, and they teach you something important about digital marketing. You’re not paying for complexity—you’re investing your time to learn fundamentals. That’s the smart way to start.
When you use these tools consistently, you build confidence. You understand how social media works. You learn what content people actually want. You see your own results. That’s real learning. That’s how you become good at digital marketing.
